Mother’s Going To Shrug Us Off.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Oh, here am I
Wishing well is nearly running dry
Addicted to this way of life
The party’s winding down
Sober up, or Mother’s going to shrug us off
Oh, woe is me
Aren’t so many fish left in the sea
Look at our predicament
It can’t have come to this
Yet here we stand upon the precipice
Oh, there you are
Tender is the time we spend together
Oh, I love you far beyond the sea
Please make me whole
Set me free as the birds that used to be.

People Going Somewhere

People Going Somewhere.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
People going somewhere, spinning ‘round the sun
People going somewhere spinning ‘round our ever-giving Father Sun
We think the sun rises and sets over us, but Father Sun is still
And we’re the ones
People going somewhere, the Moon over our heads
People going somewhere Sister Moon is up above over our heads
She waxes and she wanes and so the tides they push and pull us
Fit to wake the dead
People going somewhere, but how far can we go?
People going somewhere but tell me how much farther can we truly go?
It’s one step forward, three steps back
It might get better, but wishing never made it so
No, wishing never made it so
So make a wish
And don’t forget to blow
No, don’t forget to blow.

Santa Fe

Santa Fe.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Well, I was wandering the fruited plain
No one seemed to know my name
I was trying to get to Santa Fe
And then an 18-wheeler slowed on down
Driver said, “Where you going, clown?”
Said I was trying to get to Santa Fe
So he rolled me in to Denver
Told me, “Son, you must remember
“When you finally get to Santa Fe~
“You’ve got to get down on your knees
“Kiss the ground begging, ‘Please,
“’Bring me Fortune or Redemption, Santa Fe’”
Well, from Denver it was all down hill,
Didn’t have a dime to pay a bill
Dreaming day and night of Santa Fe
My clothes were torn, my nerves were shattered
Ashes of my life were scattered
Sleeping by the road to Santa Fe
Then that 18-wheeler found the shoulder
Driver said, “You’re looking older…
“Hop on in, I’m bound near Santa Fe…
“But you got to get down on your knees
“Kiss the ground begging, ‘Please
“’Bring me Fortune or Redemption, Santa Fe’”
And on the day I stumbled into town
The preacher man could not be found
For the Devil heard my prayer in Santa Fe
He said “I’ve known you son, I’ve known you long
“Santa Fe’s where you belong~
“So take my hand, for this is where you’ll stay”
And then the Devil pulled me from my knees
Held me tightly in the breeze
And kissed me till it burned and sealed my fate~
It was the driver from the road
That’s the truth, so now my story’s told:
A fortune for my soul in Santa Fe.

Hideous Monster

Hideous Monster.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Don’t talk – I can’t hear what you say
Don’t walk – or just get out of my way
Don’t look – Or look the other way
I’m a hideous monster
I know I’ll find my way
Eventually
Don’t speak – if you’ve got nothing to say
Don’t creep – no, don’t be creeping my way
Don’t love – or don’t love me like that
You’re using me
Just live – because your life is your own
You’ve got to forgive – And then you’ve got to go home
So just love – You’ve got to make your own way
Make love
I hope you’ll find your way eventually
So take your time
Take your time
Take your time, my friend
Take your time.

Taillights

Taillights.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Fix your eyes on my taillights, baby, watch me go
You never really loved me, honey, now I know
Take a nice long look
I’m driving real slow
But I’ve got eyes in the back of my head, so baby take care
Mess with me you’ll wish you were dead, so stay out of my hair
I’m a stone-cold killer with a broken heart, baby beware
Baby beware
Baby beware
You put this ice in my veins, mama, now my blood runs cold
Once I had a soul, mama, but now it’s been bought and it’s been sold
They say to play the hand you’re dealt, but I think you should fold
Stay on the mat, don’t get up
I’m throwing in the towel, your time is up
T.K.O.
D.O.A.
Vital signs say now it’s time to pray
See that light? It’s for you
My taillights, baby~ they’re for you
Taillights, baby, they’re burning for you
Burning for you, burning for you
Taillights, baby
I’m driving real slow.
So you can watch me go, etc.

Never Win

Never Win.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
I call your name you claim you never hear me
All the same I pray that you’ll be near me
Hear me
I fly up in your sky you try to ground me
I dive down in your sea your tides will drown me
Put your arms around me
Don’t forsake me, won’t you take me in
Understand I’m just a man who knows he’ll never win
Supine upon your earth, you pull me under
Basking in your light, you bring the thunder
Wonderful
Don’t be cold, have mercy on the poor
Understand your biggest fan is dying to be yours
Wandering your desert, no oasis
Cast out from your palace wall
No place is safe for me
Praying in your church, there’s no forgiveness
Left out in the lurch, no monkey business
Mrs, please~
Won’t you let me show you I’m for real
Give me one chance to steal your heart and win your love, my dear
Oh, no
Playing in your garden is a dream
Plundering your treasure is a pleasure
I might never ever see
Won’t you let me try to make it real
There’s still time to change your mind and help my lonely heart to heal
I sing a song of love, you never mind me
I’m lost without you, doubt you’ll ever find me
Blind me, Love…
Love
Don’t forsake me, won’t you take me in
Understand I’m just a man who knows he’ll never win.
Never going to win, etc.

Jennie

Jennie.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Jennie had nothing and nobody
Nowhere to run, no one to love
Kicked and stoned, skin and bones
Like a rolling stone
So Jennie came to New York City
Looking for a better life
Her belly was empty, but her legs were strong
Her heart was full of that Lou Reed song
About “drinking sangria in the park, until later when it gets dark,
A perfect day…”
Jennie dreams of a perfect day
Jennie knew there had to be more to life
She went looking for love
In all the wrong places, so many sad faces
Was there a God up above?
Nobody knows
Least of all Jennie
But Jennie she knows, she knows, she knows about
Love…
Jennie is a good girl
And Jennie is a bad girl
Jennie rides the Tilt-a-whirl
Jennie rides the carousel…
Jennie rides the Cyclone
Jennie is all alone
Jennie walks the boardwalk
Jennie knows how to talk
Jennie is a good girl… and Jennie is a bad girl.

Sheila.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Sheila never will reveal her real name to you
So go on, keep pretending that your heart is black and blue
Sheila can’t be blamed for thinking you’re a fool
Just look at yourself going ‘round and ‘round
Holding yourself down
Sheila’s eyes are open wide
And her heart is filled with joy and pain and love
Sheila takes you by surprise
You never saw her coming and now you know
There’s nowhere left for you to hide
Mother loves her child, son becomes a man
Watch her take her place among the stars
Sheila…Sheila
She loves you
Sheila takes you by the hand
So go on, wipe away your tears and try to understand:
We’re born to live, we’re born to die
We’re born to laugh, we’re born to cry
Here today, we’re gone tomorrow, no more sorrow
Hand in hand you fly
Mother loves her child, son becomes a man
Watch her take her place among the stars
Sheila…Sheila…Sheila… etc.
She loves you.

Oh, Rosie.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Rosie don’t know just where she’s going
How she’s going to get there, what she’s going to be
And Rosie don’t know, what makes the great world spin
And how she fits right in, how deep the sea
But Rosie she knows, she likes Be-bop, 8-ball and robots
Bluebells and Red-hots
And she likes me
Oh, Rosie, don’t you know~
Wherever you’re going
I want to go there
I want to go
Rosie don’t know why all that lives must die
And why so blue the sky, how green the tree
Rosie don’t know why people kill with guns
And why we build prisons, and why she’s free
But Rosie she knows she likes rising suns
French girls and elephants
Pink Floyd and Alfred Lunt
And she likes me
Oh, Rosie, don’t you know~
Wherever you’re going
I want to go there,
I want to go there
I want to go
Let’s go.

The Story of Maryjane (& Me).
(Jon Patrick Walker)
I was walking through the park
Seems like yesterday
It was getting rather dark
I felt like making hay
Then I saw her
Pretty Maryjane
She said, “How’s the foundry?”
I said, “Can’t complain.”
Then I took her hand, doffed my tartan cap
We stepped off the lane, and we had a nap
Now Maryjane is my wife
There’s a baby, it’s a life
Can’t complain, last refrain:
There’s the story~
There’s the story~
There’s the story of Maryjane
And me
Now Maryjane is his wife
There’s a baby, it’s a life
Can’t complain, last refrain:
There’s the story~
There’s the story~
There’s the story of Maryjane
And him.

Living Hell

Living Hell.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
I’m duded up like a dandy on the F to Delancey
Ain’t never been so high in my life, never been so low
This whole human operation is looking dead chancy
But there’s a place I heard of somewhere over the rainbow
We ain’t dead yet, we’re doing just swell~
Take it or leave it, this ain’t too shabby for a living hell
For a living hell
I try to turn up the noise in my ears, but this phone don’t go to eleven
My device is a vice and it divides my mind (ain’t that the truth)
There might just be time to pay my penance to Jesus, and try to get into heaven
But baby, listen, baby, baby, you know I got too much to prove
Well, we ain’t dead yet, we’re doing just swell~
Take it or leave it, this ain’t too shabby for a living hell
For a living hell
We’re like the band on the Titanic, we try not to panic, yeah, we play on
The ship’s going down but raise a glass to the end of the world
It’s been real, it’s been cool, but it hasn’t been real cool
Put your head between your legs, kiss your ass goodbye, boys and girls
We ain’t dead yet we’re doing just fine
Take it or leave it, you ain’t no friend of mine
We ain’t dead yet, we’re doing just groovy
Take it or leave it, this ain’t no feel-good movie
We ain’t dead yet we’re doing just swell
Take it or leave it this ain’t too shabby for a living hell
For a living hell, etc.

While I'm Away

While I’m Away.
(Jon Patrick Walker)
Please don’t talk shit behind my back, while I’m away
‘Cause I’m only human, so they say
And please don’t imagine I’ll be good
‘Cause it ain’t easy, and I would if I could
I’m not the man you think I am
I’m dying on the way to the end of the road
An impossible load
So raise a glass and let’s bring ‘round the car
I’ll grab my things, and just set off for the stars
Watch me go
Up, up & away
Please don’t judge the way I live, you must forgive me
‘Cause I’m trying in my own way
And please don’t expect me to give in
There’s no surrender, and losers never win
I’m not the man you think I am
I’m dying on the way to the end of the road
An impossible load
So raise a glass and let’s bring ‘round the car
I’ll grab my things and just set off for the stars
Oh, watch me go
Up, up & away
Up & away
Away…
I’m not the man you think I am
I’m dying on the way to the end of the road
An impossible load
I’ll close my eyes, and I’ll be far away
Among the moon & stars
I’ll ride the milky way
Away.
Away.
Away.
